AFDC also lists 28 private or fleet-only CNG sites in Pennsylvania. They are left out of the counts and tables above because a driver cannot fill there today. How we count.

Pennsylvania: Marcellus gas, transit fleets and turnpike stations

Pennsylvania sits on top of the Marcellus shale, and for a decade the state treated natural gas vehicles as a way to use its own production. The Act 13 impact-fee program paid for dozens of fleet conversions and fueling stations in the early 2010s, most of them at transit agencies, refuse haulers and county fleets, and many of those sites sell to the public from a yard with a card reader. That is why nearly two thirds of Pennsylvania's public stations show up as "independent" here: they are named for a transit authority, a county or a small operator rather than a network.

The named networks fill in the highway side. Trillium built stations for PennDOT's transit CNG program and along the turnpike, and Clean Energy has truck sites at the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh ends of the state. Pennsylvania is also one of the few states on this list with public time-fill-only sites; they are marked with the red badge and are not useful to a passing driver.

Coverage is best across the southern tier, on I-76, I-81 and I-95, and around Pittsburgh. The I-80 corridor through the middle of the state has a handful of stations spread across a long rural stretch; the corridor page lists them in order.
