Driving I-40 on natural gas

I-40's western half is the hard part. From Barstow there is one station at Williams, Arizona, then nothing across the Navajo Nation and northern New Mexico until Albuquerque, then another long run to Amarillo. Two of the three longest gaps on this page are in that stretch, and a driver leaving Southern California for Oklahoma should treat Williams and Albuquerque as mandatory stops with a full package on departure.

Oklahoma flips the picture: more than two dozen stations along the corridor from the Texas line to Arkansas, with Oklahoma City as the hub. Arkansas has a handful, Tennessee has Memphis and Nashville, and North Carolina is well served from Asheville through the Triad to Raleigh and down to Wilmington, mostly at Piedmont and PSNC (Enbridge) utility stations. Eastern I-40 is a comfortable natural gas route; western I-40 is a planned one.
