Driving I-5 on natural gas

From San Diego to Sacramento, I-5 is the best-served long stretch of interstate in the country for CNG. The Los Angeles basin alone has dozens of stations within the corridor buffer, the Central Valley has Clean Energy and Chevron truck sites at Bakersfield, the Kettleman City area, Stockton and Sacramento, and PG&E and SoCalGas yards fill in between. A Class 8 tractor can run the whole valley without thinking about fuel.

North of Sacramento the picture changes completely. After Redding there is one fill in Oregon and nothing else until the Portland area, and the corridor page's longest gap sits on that stretch. Washington has a small cluster around Seattle and Tacoma, most of it fleet yards that sell to the public. A truck leaving the Bay Area for Seattle needs a full package and should treat the Oregon station as a required stop, not an option.
